Google is trying to provide secure transaction and services to the customers around the world. It is evident through their announcement of using HTTPS as a ranking signal for websites on 6th August 2014 in their Webmaster central blog. This is an important move to provide safe searches to visitors coming in the Google search engines and prevent unwanted incidents. Further, it will help users to securely deal with the financial transactions and prevent all confidential documents from falling in the wrong hands. This step is being taken after the phenomenal rise of online frauds these days on the web.
What are HTTPS and SSL?
Hypertext transfer protocol secure (HTTPS) is a secure version of HTTP and it is widely used in e-commerce website for secure transaction. John Mueller- a Google Trends Analyst hinted that he would love to see Google using SSL in sites. Secure socket locket (SSL) is used to make a secure connection for transmitting files. Matt Cutts (Head of Spam Team Google) in the SMX West in March 2014 conference stated that he wants to add SSL as a part of the Google’s ranking algorithm. Hence, this announcement came to make HTTPS essential for every website trying to provide a secure connection.
Is Using HTTPS Will Improve Your Ranking?
Webmasters are being encouraged by Google to use HTTPS instead of HTTP in their website to provide security to users. Though, it is still a lightweight ranking signal affecting less than 1% of the total search volume across the globe, unlike the quality contents. But, it is expected to increase in the months or years to come and can play a more prominent role in ranking a website. Further, it will be wise for the webmaster to heed the word of most used search engine which has more than 68% of total search volume. If you are following the advice of Google, surely it will favour you for a higher ranking than others who don’t.
Though still there is no established connection of using HTTPS as a ranking factor surely it will be in the future. Providing a secure connection to customers can increase their trust and loyalty towards your brands which directly influence customer satisfaction. Thus, it is a high time to change your website into a more secure version.
