In 2013, Google started a mapathon project in India. In this project, the organization has encouraged the people to contribute to fill the gap and improve Google Maps in the country. Before starting the project, the Central Bureau of Investigation has asked the company not to collect secret documents like key military installation of the country.
The main purpose of this project was to collect data about business location, a point of interest, and geographical features of the country. Though the military installation information was not in the required list still, the documents have been collected by the participants in the project.
This is why the Indian government is on fire with Google and may face potential penalties for exposing the classified documents on the internet. The Survey of India is solely responsible for approving public maps and mapping data. But, the agency said that Google didn’t consult before starting the mapathon. This is why the CBI is investigating the matter to know the real cause of this problem.
A user looking for military installation gets many locations or results in the map. It is not known whether these locations are known or classified to the people. It is difficult to say what will come out of the investigation but whatever secret revealed can’t be made secret again. Earlier, the Google map has revealed the classified military bases of Australia, US and Israel in the web. Let us wait and watch about the result in the investigation.
